WhatsApp Rolls Out Dual Account Access on Single Device

New Feature Requires Active SIMs for Both Accounts and Rolls Out First for Android Devices

  • WhatsApp has introduced a feature allowing two accounts to be logged in simultaneously on a single device. This allows users to easily switch between, for example, personal and work accounts, without needing to log off.
  • Setting up a second account requires a second phone number and SIM card, or a phone that accepts multi-SIM or eSIM. Users can manage distinct privacy and notification settings for each account.
  • The feature will first be rolled out for Android devices. It is unclear when the iPhone app will receive the update.
  • Some users may still need to use workarounds if they do not want to have both SIMs active on the same phone. These could include using main WhatsApp for one account and the WA Business app for the other.
  • Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has been working towards easing access to WhatsApp from multiple devices. Earlier, it introduced a feature allowing a single account to be used across tablets, browsers, computers and recently added additional smartphones to the list.
  • The new feature is seen as a further enhancement of the app's functionality, following on from giving users the ability to sync one account across up to four phones.
