WhatsApp Introduces Incognito AI Chats With Private Processing

The move aims to ease privacy concerns about talking to Meta’s chatbot inside everyday conversations.

Overview

  • Meta announced Wednesday that Incognito Chats for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app will roll out worldwide in the coming months.
  • The mode uses Private Processing, which handles messages in a secured space that Meta says it cannot access, and it does not store chats with messages vanishing by default.
  • Meta also plans Nebenchats that open a side thread with AI inside a conversation and will use the same protection.
  • WhatsApp already includes an Advanced Chat Privacy switch for each chat that blocks @Meta AI and stops auto‑saving media and chat export.
  • An app‑wide off switch for Meta AI is not available, and privacy still has limits because people can screenshot or forward messages and Meta continues to collect metadata like IP and last‑online time.
