WhatsApp Developing Guest Calls to Let Non‑Users Join Calls

Reports say the feature would allow people to join voice or video calls in a web browser with mandatory host approval.

Overview

  • WABetaInfo reported Sunday that WhatsApp is developing a feature called guest calls to let people without a WhatsApp account join calls via a shared web link.
  • A host would create a call link from the Calls tab and a recipient could open that link in a browser to enter the call without downloading the app or creating an account.
  • WhatsApp will generate a unique browser-session identifier for each guest and use that identifier to derive the encryption key so guest calls remain end-to-end encrypted.
  • Hosts must manually approve every guest request, can remove problematic participants during a call, and removed guests will be blocked from rejoining the same call.
  • The feature is under development, not available to beta testers, and has no public release date yet; if launched it would widen who can join WhatsApp calls while increasing reliance on hosts for moderation.
