WhatsApp Cuts Support for Older Phones on Oct. 1 as New Features Roll Out

Meta says the shift keeps security current and enables tools like in‑chat translation and an Android document scanner, urging users to back up and plan migrations if their devices no longer qualify.

Overview

  • Support ends for many legacy models on Oct. 1, 2025, with reports citing iPhone 5, 5c, first‑gen SE and iPhone 6 (if not updated beyond iOS 12), plus older Androids such as Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 Mini and Note 2, early Moto G, and select LG, Sony, Huawei and HTC phones.
  • WhatsApp’s Help Center lists minimum OS versions to keep using the app: Android 5.0 or higher, iOS 12 or higher, and KaiOS 2.5.0 or higher (including JioPhone).
  • Users on affected devices are advised to back up chats to iCloud or Google Drive, try updating their OS, use WhatsApp Web as a short‑term workaround, or migrate to a newer phone.
  • WhatsApp is rolling out an in‑chat translator that lets users translate messages without leaving the conversation, with Android initially supporting six languages and broader language support on iOS.
  • An in‑app document scanner is arriving on Android, while Live/Motion Photos and Meta AI features such as custom chat themes and AI‑generated video call backgrounds are in staged or beta release.
