WhatsApp Begins EU Beta for Cross‑App Messaging

The opt-in beta reflects WhatsApp’s effort to comply with the EU Digital Markets Act.

Overview

  • The capability is rolling out to some testers on iOS and Android in Europe, with access expanding over the coming weeks.
  • Users can exchange texts, photos, videos, voice notes and documents in one‑to‑one conversations with people on supported apps from within WhatsApp.
  • BirdyChat is the first approved integration, with end‑to‑end encryption maintained and third‑party services required to pass WhatsApp’s security review even as their data practices may differ.
  • The feature is off by default and can be enabled via Settings > Account > Third‑Party Chats, with controls for a combined or separate inbox and for receiving request notifications.
  • Status updates, stickers, disappearing messages and group chats are not yet supported, and cross‑platform voice and video calls are not expected until 2027 according to reporting.
