WhatsApp Adds Four Group‑Chat Tools and Begins Gradual Rollout

The update aims to make group threads easier to follow by adding indefinite pins, retroactive history sharing, group-only Status posts, mentions and replies filtering, with shared chats remaining end-to-end encrypted.

Overview

  • WhatsApp announced the four features in late October and has started a staged rollout to Android and iOS accounts that will expand to more users over the coming weeks.
  • Groups can now keep pinned messages indefinitely so important details stay visible without choosing a 24-hour, 7-day, or 30-day limit.
  • Admins and members can retroactively share recent chat history with someone who already joined by tapping that person’s name, and WhatsApp says those shared messages remain end-to-end encrypted.
  • Group-specific Status posts let members share ephemeral updates visible only inside a given group for 24 hours, and a new Mentions & Replies filter shows unread group items where you were mentioned or directly replied to, including @all messages.
  • The tools respond to past limits that made catching up hard by improving discoverability and admin controls, but availability will vary by app version and account while the company finishes the rollout.
