Whataburger to Close Auburn and Tuscaloosa Restaurants on Dec. 15 as Part of Southeast Portfolio Trim

The burger chain calls the move a routine review step, signaling 40-plus Southeast openings in 2026.

Overview

  • The downtown Auburn site at North College Street and Magnolia Avenue and Tuscaloosa’s 1130 University Blvd restaurant will close on Dec. 15.
  • Team members were offered transfers, with Auburn staff able to move to Opelika and Tuscaloosa employees to the city’s other two restaurants.
  • The Alabama actions are part of eight closures across three states, including Athens and Dahlonega in North Georgia and four Tennessee sites in Clarksville, Mount Juliet, and Murfreesboro.
  • Whataburger says the shuttered restaurants represent less than 1% of its more than 1,100 locations.
  • The company projects over 40 new Southeast openings in 2026 and currently lists 43 locations in Alabama.
