WGA East Partners With Cloak to Make Scripts Unreadable to AI

The deal gives writers a technical tool to control who can use their work and supports the guild’s wider campaign against unconsented AI training.

Overview

  • The Writers Guild of America East announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Cloak to offer members free access to software that renders script files illegible to most AI models while keeping them readable to human readers.
  • Cloak’s patent-pending tool scrambles or obfuscates document text so automated scrapers and AI summary features cannot easily ingest it, and users can send an ‘AI-proof’ copy to agents, producers, actors, or others.
  • Non-members can get Cloak protection for an added $10 when they register a script through WGAE’s script registration service, while members receive the service at no charge as part of their benefits.
  • Cloak and the guild cite company tests that claim effectiveness against specific models and automated-summary tools from major providers, but those test results are reported by the company and have not been independently verified.
  • The partnership builds on WGAE’s broader strategy of contract language, legislation, member education, and public campaigns to limit unauthorized AI use of writers’ work and give creators more control over how their material is shared.
