WFP Warns Nigeria Faces Record Hunger in 2026 as Funding Runs Out Next Month

The UN food agency says escalating attacks are swelling needs beyond its current resources.

Overview

  • Nearly 35 million people in Nigeria are projected to face severe food insecurity during the June–August 2026 lean season, the highest level recorded, according to the latest Cadre Harmonisé.
  • WFP says its emergency food and nutrition funds will be exhausted in December, after July cutbacks that affected more than 300,000 children and saw malnutrition worsen to critical levels where clinics closed.
  • Insurgent violence has intensified in 2025, with JNIM reportedly conducting its first attack in Nigeria last month and ISWAP pursuing expansion across the Sahel, alongside reported attacks on schools and missing educators and schoolgirls.
  • In the conflict-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, nearly six million people are projected to face crisis-level hunger or worse in 2026, including about 15,000 in Borno expected to face catastrophic Phase 5 conditions, with children at greatest risk in Borno, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara.
  • OHCHR reports at least 402 kidnappings since 17 November, mainly schoolchildren in north-central states, with only 88 freed or escaped as it urges investigations, safe returns and accountability.
