Wetherspoon Confirms First Mainland Europe Pub at Alicante Airport for January 2026

The airside venue signals a franchise-led expansion into overseas airports.

Overview

  • Castell de Santa Bàrbera will open in late January 2026 inside the departures area of Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport.
  • The pub will trade daily from 6am to 9pm, offering about 1,000 sq ft of customer space on one level plus an external terrace, with food served until an hour before closing.
  • About 90% of the menu mirrors UK favourites such as breakfasts, burgers, pizzas and fish and chips, with additions including garlic prawns and Spanish omelette and a beer range featuring Guinness, Stella Artois and local brews.
  • JD Wetherspoon frames the site as part of a plan to open roughly 30 pubs this financial year split between managed locations and franchises, with more overseas openings targeted by chairman Tim Martin.
  • The group operates close to 800 pubs and recently reported like-for-like sales up 3.7% over 14 weeks and pre-tax profit of about £81.4m, while warning of higher wage, national insurance, energy and packaging costs adding roughly £60m a year.
