Westminster Debate Puts ‘Maya’s Law’ Child-Protection Proposals Before MPs Today

The family-led campaign presses for a Child Risk Disclosure Scheme with statutory information sharing to close safeguarding gaps.

Overview

  • Liz Twist, MP for Blaydon and Consett, is leading a Westminster Hall session at 4pm to raise the proposals, with Maya Chappell’s relatives in attendance and the Home Office due to respond.
  • The plan, inspired by Clare’s Law and Sarah’s Law, would create a Child Risk Disclosure Scheme and impose a legal duty for police, social care and health services to share relevant histories when a child is at risk.
  • Campaigners also propose stronger multi-agency protocols around custody and unsupervised access decisions, plus powers for professionals to trigger safeguarding alerts and family court interventions even without an active investigation.
  • The push has drawn backing from North East MPs, Durham Police and Crime Commissioner Joy Allen, North East Mayor Kim McGuinness and councillors across parties in County Durham.
  • Hours before the debate, the family appeared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain to rally support for their petition of more than 6,000 signatures, where a Department for Education statement said separate child-protection legislation is being rolled out.
