Western U.P. Nears Peak Fall Color as Heat and Drought Stall Lower Michigan

Near-record warmth with drought is delaying Lower Peninsula color.

Overview

  • Local meteorologists report the western Upper Peninsula has advanced to roughly 50% color, with peak expected around Oct. 10–14.
  • NASA’s Sept. 29 VIIRS image shows parts of the western U.P. already fully changed.
  • Pure Michigan’s weekly map lists site-by-site estimates and windows, including Keweenaw at 20–40% with an Oct. 3–10 peak and Marquette and Munising peaking in mid-October.
  • Most of the Lower Peninsula remains largely green, with frost likely at least 10–14 days away, slowing the southward progression.
  • The U.S. Drought Monitor shows expanding severe drought in parts of West Michigan, prompting early browning and muted color, though inland stretches like M-115 between Clare and Cadillac are near 50%.
