Western Storm Enters Pakistan With Snow and Rain Forecast Through Jan. 2

Authorities have activated nationwide alerts urging tourists to avoid mountain travel during the Dec. 30–Jan. 2 spell.

Overview

  • The NDMA warned of rains, snowfall and landslides from Dec. 29 to Jan. 2, with emergency control centers placed on alert.
  • The PMD expects the westerly system to intensify on Dec. 30 and persist over northern regions until the morning of Jan. 2.
  • Karachi is forecast to receive its first winter drizzle on the night of Dec. 30, with the minimum temperature near 11°C.
  • Heavy snowfall may close roads and trigger landslides or avalanches in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, and travelers are advised to carry snow chains and emergency supplies.
  • Dense fog has already forced closures on parts of the M-2, M-3, M-4 and M-11 motorways, though visibility in Punjab and upper Sindh is expected to improve during the wet spell.
