Western Railway Reports 100% Pass Rate in 18,610 Drinking‑Water Tests

Railway officials say routine surveillance and inter-department repairs will continue to sustain water safety after large-scale testing and remedial work.

Overview

  • Western Railway’s Medical Department carried out 15,936 residual chlorine tests and 2,674 bacteriological tests between September 1 and October 20, 2026, and reported that all 18,610 samples met the checks used in those two testing categories.
  • Residual chlorine testing measures whether enough disinfectant remains in the distribution system and bacteriological analysis looks for harmful microbes, so the two tests together provide a snapshot of disinfection effectiveness and microbiological safety.
  • Central Railway’s Mumbai Division launched a CAG‑prompted inspection across 2,967 sites and identified 410 deficiencies; officials say 365 defects have been fixed and 45 locations are currently under repair.
  • Western Railway says it will continue regular sampling, laboratory analysis, supervision and coordination with maintenance departments to take corrective action when tests or inspections identify problems.
  • The testing covers drinking-water at stations and in railway colonies and protects passengers, staff and families, but officials caution the 100% pass rate applies only to the monitoring window and sustained checks and tank and pipeline upkeep are needed to prevent future contamination.
