Western Railway Kicks Off Kavach Rollout on Mumbai Local Trains

It will replace the manual AWS with a SIL4-certified automatic train protection system on Mumbai's busiest suburban corridor.

Overview

  • Western Railway has begun installing Kavach on ChurchgateVirar–Dahanu services, marking the shift from AWS.
  • The rollout aims to equip all 110 EMUs over 2,358 route km of Mumbai suburban lines by end of next year.
  • Certified at Safety Integrity Level 4, Kavach delivers continuous signal updates, in-cab alerts and automatic brake intervention to prevent signal-passed-at-danger incidents.
  • The system is already operational on 4,001 route km of the DelhiMumbai corridor, supported by 5,800 km of optical fibre links and training for 30,000 staff.
  • Commissioning on the MumbaiAhmedabad corridor is scheduled for March 2026, expanding the Make-in-India modernisation drive.
