Western Railway Keeps Trains Running Through Red‑Alert Rains as Harbour Line Faces Delays

A clogged Dharavi drain emerged as a key vulnerability, forcing dewatering efforts to keep low-lying tracks usable.

Overview

  • Western Railway said suburban and long-distance services ran continuously through the August 16–18 red alert that brought 250–300 mm of rain to multiple stations.
  • Central Railway reported heavier impact with Harbour line points clamped between Kurla and Tilak Nagar and main-line slowdowns from low visibility.
  • Sources said Central Railway cancelled more than 100 services, while Western Railway reported five cancellations as officials monitored water levels across the network.
  • WR credited over 110 dewatering pumps, more than 180 staff including about 70 pump operators, and Digital Axle Counters for safe movement even when water rose above the rails, with inspections led by DRM Pankaj Singh.
  • Waterlogging near MatungaMahim and SionKurla was linked to a choked Dharavi nullah maintained by the BMC; Mumbai Metro ran normally and BEST diverted dozens of routes to keep commuters moving.
