Western Command Expands Flood Relief as Rescues Top 5,500 in Punjab and Jammu

Fresh columns moved into Ghaggar‑hit districts following rising water levels.

Overview

  • Under Operation RAHAT, the Indian Army reports rescuing more than 5,500 civilians and 300 paramilitary personnel across the JammuPathankot sector, Punjab and parts of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Relief teams have delivered over 27 tonnes of essential supplies and provided medical aid to more than 3,000 people, with operations continuing round the clock.
  • More than 50 Army columns are deployed alongside civil authorities, NDRF, SDRF and the BSF, with about 20 aircraft conducting sustained evacuation and supply sorties including ALHs, Mi‑17s and a Chinook.
  • Engineer and communications units restored critical links by laying over 2 km of optical fibre to revive mobile service, building a Bailey bridge at Jammu Tawi, rebuilding the Jaitpur Bund, repairing the Sidhra water line and reopening damaged roads.
  • Recent targeted rescues include a pregnant woman airlifted from Ramkot to a military hospital in Samba and a bedridden cardiac patient carried to a boat for evacuation from Sammoval in Amritsar.
