Western Cape Court Enforces Venue Order as Kaapse Klopse Sets Jan. 5 Parade

The ruling compels the metro to secure a stadium venue for the competitions despite its appeal.

Around 20,000 performers and 150,000 spectators are expected on the upcoming parade day, exceptionally scheduled for January 5 for logistical reasons, according to the main organisers, the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association (KKKA)
The first carnival is believed to have taken place in 1887, rooted in the cultural mix of enslaved Africans and Southeast Asians, indigenous Khoi and San, and black South Africans

Overview

  • The Western Cape High Court issued a late-night ruling making its 29 December order immediately enforceable, directing the City of Cape Town to provide a suitable alternative venue at its cost from 1 January.
  • The court said the order stands despite the city's appeal and noted the city failed to show harm, after it withdrew earlier approval for Vygieskraal Stadium citing operational and safety concerns.
  • Organisers have confirmed the street parade and opening competition day for 5 January, with a shortened route that finishes at DHL Stadium in Green Point.
  • The event will be broadcast live on SABC 2 on 5 January from 12:00 to 14:30, offering nationwide access.
  • Rising costs and reduced participation have reshaped the season, with 16 KKKA-affiliated troupes competing, while critics object to higher fees, sponsorship ties, and a route that bypasses District Six and Bo-Kaap.
