Western Australia Bushfires Threaten Lives and Homes Amid Severe Heatwave

Multiple out-of-control fires in the Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions challenge firefighters as temperatures soar above 40°C.

  • A bushfire in Northam, north-east of Perth, has been downgraded from an emergency warning to a Watch and Act, but residents in some areas are still advised it is too late to leave.
  • Evacuation routes in parts of Northam remain blocked, with an evacuation center set up at Northam Recreation Centre on Peel Terrace.
  • Another out-of-control fire in the Shire of Yilgarn, near Jilbaji Nature Reserve, has burned through 1,000 hectares and continues to spread rapidly southeast.
  • In the Great Southern region near Narrikup, a fast-moving fire has led to emergency warnings for residents, with roads closed and shelter-in-place advisories issued.
  • Firefighters are battling difficult conditions, including a heatwave with temperatures reaching nearly 44°C, expected to persist for three more days.
