Westbound I-696 Moves to New Eastbound Lanes as Rebuild Enters Next Phase

The shift launches a yearlong rebuild with local ramp closures through November 2026.

Overview

  • MDOT shifted westbound traffic onto the newly built eastbound lanes at 5 a.m. Monday as part of the Restore the Reuther project.
  • Entrance and exit ramps at Couzens, Bermuda/Hilton, Coolidge, Greenfield and Evergreen are closed through November 2026.
  • Ramps to I-75, Woodward, Southfield, Lahser, Telegraph and M-10 remain open for access along the corridor.
  • Westbound reconstruction from I-75 to Lahser continues through fall 2026, with drainage and bridge work planned in 2027 between I-75 and Dequindre.
  • MDOT estimates the changes affect about 100,000 drivers, and state police urge slower speeds, longer following distances and no phone use as commuters adjust.
