West Virginia Deploys National Guard to Run Pop-Up Food Pantries During SNAP Disruptions

The deployment responds to a shutdown-driven lapse in SNAP that left families without expected benefits.

Overview

  • Guard officials confirmed five Nov. 1 distribution sites in Roane, Ritchie, Wetzel, Ohio and Harrison counties, including Roane County High School and the Nutter Fort Volunteer Fire Department.
  • Over 200 soldiers and airmen assisted food banks and local pantries statewide, providing logistics support alongside Facing Hunger Food Bank and Mountaineer Food Bank.
  • At the Nutter Fort site, Guard members handed out more than 200 boxes of canned goods to local families, according to local reporting.
  • Adjutant General James Seward said the Guard is providing around 11 pop-up pantries in areas lacking open pantries this weekend.
  • Residents are advised to call 211 or text 898-211 to confirm locations and inventory because site lists and hours are subject to change.
