West Virginia Deploys National Guard to Run Pop-Up Food Pantries

The activation provides temporary food aid during a disruption to SNAP payments.

Overview

  • Governor Patrick Morrisey put Guard members on state duty to set up and staff pop-up distribution sites across multiple counties.
  • Guard teams worked with Mountaineer Food Bank and Facing Hunger Food Bank through Operation Feeding Families to create, load, and deliver hundreds of meal boxes.
  • Officials listed five confirmed sites on Nov. 1, with locations including Roane County High School, the Wheeling Soup Kitchen, and the Nutter Fort Volunteer Fire Department.
  • Adjutant General Jim Seward said the Guard supported around 11 pop-up pantries over the weekend in areas where regular pantries were closed.
  • Residents are urged to call 211 or text 898-211 to confirm open locations, and local reporting indicated more than 200 soldiers and airmen assisted the effort.
