West Midlands Police Renew Appeal in Two Unsolved Ferry Disappearances

Police seek new leads in two long-running ferry disappearances they do not consider connected.

Overview

  • Gary Tilston, 30, vanished after boarding the Portsmouth–Saint-Malo ferry on July 24, 2002, and Paul Carter, 22, disappeared on the same route on April 20–21, 2007.
  • Officers say there is no evidence either man disembarked in France, and Tilston’s passport, ID, house keys and other belongings were found on board.
  • Carter was traveling with three colleagues, was last seen walking the ferry looking for a place to sleep, and was missing when the ship docked the next morning.
  • Police released identifying details to aid recognition, noting Tilston’s glasses, slim build, missing right index finger and prior jaw surgery, and Carter’s slim build and snake tattoo on his right arm.
  • Anyone with information is urged to contact police via 101 or Live Chat, quoting references MPCV/9264/10 for Tilston and MPD2/2076/07 for Carter.
