West Fraser to Close Georgia and B.C. Mills, Make U.S. Curtailments Permanent

The company blames constrained timber supply, weak lumber demand, higher U.S. duties for the capacity cuts.

Overview

  • The Augusta, Georgia and 100 Mile House, British Columbia mills will shut by the end of 2025, affecting about 130 and 165 employees and trimming capacity by 140 million and 160 million board feet respectively.
  • Indefinite curtailments at Huttig, Arkansas and Lake Butler, Florida are now permanent, with the mills to be dismantled and the sites sold.
  • West Fraser says 100 Mile House lacks reliable access to economically viable timber, and Augusta has lost viable residual outlets, undermining both mills’ long‑term economics.
  • A replacement mill in Henderson, Texas has begun start‑up, and an adjacent mill there has ceased operations as part of the footprint reconfiguration.
  • The company expects to record restructuring and impairment charges in the fourth quarter of 2025 and says it will seek to place affected workers at other operations where available.
