West Bengal’s First Private Veterinary College Opens in Hooghly

Supporters cast the new institute as a move to ease India’s severe shortage of veterinarians.

Overview

  • JIS College of Veterinary & Animal Sciences (JISCOVAS) has begun operations on a 30-acre campus in Mogra, Hooghly.
  • The institution is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences and recognised by the Veterinary Council of India.
  • It will offer a 5.5-year B.V.Sc. & A.H. programme that includes a compulsory one-year internship.
  • Annual intake is set at 80 students, with NEET qualification, 50% in Class 12 physics, chemistry, biology and English for general category, and an eligible age range of 18–25.
  • India has 61,943 trained veterinarians against a need exceeding 150,000, with demand projected to reach 284,000 by 2040, while livestock contributes about 3.89% to West Bengal’s GDP.
