West Bengal Sets Sept. 1–4 Special Assembly Session on Migrant Safety, EC’s SIR

Planned censure motions target alleged worker detentions plus the EC’s voter-roll revision, setting up an election-year flashpoint.

Overview

  • Speaker Biman Banerjee confirmed the three-day sitting for September 1, 2 and 4, with September 3 off for Karam Puja.
  • The TMC says it will move a motion condemning alleged detentions and assaults of Bengali-speaking migrant workers in BJP-ruled states and the branding of migrants as Bangladeshis.
  • Leaders indicate the House may also take up a resolution opposing the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision after deletions reported in Bihar, which the TMC argues could be replicated in Bengal.
  • The state highlights its new Shramashree package for returnees, offering Rs 5,000 for travel and Rs 5,000 a month for up to a year along with rations, health cards, community kitchens and schooling support.
  • The BJP, backing detentions and the SIR, criticises the agenda as political, as the TMC also plans to raise the Governor’s return of the Aparajita Bill without assent.
