West Bengal Scales Fish Output to 23.75 Lakh Tonnes, Eyes Import-Free Future

Pairing record harvests with cultivation and safety measures will end fish imports within a year

Overview

  • The state produced 23.75 lakh tonnes of fish in FY2024-25, sharply reducing its reliance on roughly 1 lakh tonnes of annual imports.
  • Internal trade climbed to 1.78 lakh tonnes in 2024-25 from 1.62 lakh tonnes a year ago, with shipments mainly to Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha.
  • Under the Abhay Pukur scheme authorities have procured 33 rare fish species from 20 identified ponds to diversify farmed varieties.
  • Officials have distributed GPS devices to 500 fishermen for sea-safety and plan to equip another 3,500 trawlers.
  • Regular block-level training programmes and efforts to cultivate 1kg hilsa are in place to boost quality and long-term sustainability.
