West Bengal Governor Sues TMC MP, Files Police Case Over Raj Bhavan Arms Claim

A weapon search at Raj Bhavan found nothing, prompting legal action.

Overview

  • Raj Bhavan filed a police complaint against MP Kalyan Banerjee over his claim that arms were distributed from the Governor’s House, invoking BNS 2023 sections 151, 152, 197, 196(1)(a) and (b), 353(1)(b) and (c), and 353(2).
  • The Governor’s office also moved the Calcutta High Court through the officer-on-special duty, arguing the remarks defamed the constitutional office and could cause public disorder, and seeking an apology.
  • A joint combing operation at Raj Bhavan led by Governor C. V. Ananda Bose with Kolkata Police and other agencies found no arms or explosives.
  • Banerjee has not apologized, said he will approach the court, and alleged the Governor is acting as a BJP functionary while calling the cases motivated.
  • It was not confirmed by Tuesday night whether the police complaint had been registered as an FIR, and the Trinamool leadership, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had not publicly responded.
