Overview
- Governor CV Ananda Bose has authorized the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to prosecute former Education Minister Partha Chatterjee in a money laundering case related to primary teacher recruitment in West Bengal.
- This approval follows earlier gubernatorial sanctions for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to prosecute Chatterjee in a separate case concerning secondary school job recruitment irregularities.
- Manik Bhattacharya, former president of the West Bengal Board of Primary Education, has also received sanction for prosecution by the ED in the same primary teacher recruitment case.
- Partha Chatterjee, a Trinamool Congress MLA, has been in detention since his 2022 arrest by the ED for alleged involvement in the multi-crore teacher recruitment scam.
- The Calcutta High Court previously denied Chatterjee bail in December 2024, ensuring he remains in custody as legal proceedings advance.
