West Bengal Customs Officer Dies During Goechala Trek in Sikkim

Police attribute the death to altitude-related complications pending a full inquiry.

Overview

  • Police identified the deceased as Suman Debnath, 38, a CGST and Customs superintendent from West Bengal who was trekking with an organised group.
  • He developed severe headache, nausea, breathlessness and extreme fatigue during the ascent before collapsing at Phedang around 9:05 pm.
  • The location lies nearly 25 km from Yuksom at roughly 12,000 feet, where difficult terrain and altitude complicated immediate assistance.
  • Rescue teams, porters and local guides took nearly a full day to bring his body down to Yuksom, after which it was sent to Gyalshing District Hospital for a post-mortem.
  • An unnatural death case has been registered, the post-mortem has been completed, and the body has been handed to the family in Agarpara.
