West Bengal Cabinet Approves OBC Expansion, New Farakka Subdivision and Restart of Tajpur Port Bidding

Overview

  • The cabinet approved adding 76 castes to West Bengal’s Other Backward Class list, expanding it from 64 to 140 recognised groups.
  • A new Farakka subdivision was carved out of Murshidabad, comprising Farakka, Shamsherganj, Suti-1 and Suti-2 blocks to ease administrative bottlenecks.
  • Authorities authorised 109 contract-based positions for the Farakka subdivision and approved 336 posts to fill vacancies in home, health, finance, law and municipal affairs departments.
  • Ministers voted to relaunch the tender process for the Rs 25,000 crore Tajpur deep-sea port, overturning the 2023 letter of intent with Adani Ports to invite fresh bids.
  • All decisions were taken on June 2 by the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the secretariat in Kolkata.
