West Bengal Appoints Permanent Vice-Chancellors at Six State Universities

A Supreme Court ruling cleared the way for consensus choices after years of vacancies.

  • Governor C V Ananda Bose, serving as Chancellor, approved six vice-chancellor appointments on October 29 with immediate effect, closing a long-running appointment impasse.
  • The appointees are Ashutosh Ghosh at the University of Calcutta, Chiranjib Bhattacharjee at Jadavpur University, Ashis Bhattacharjee at the University of Gour Banga, Uday Bandyopadhyay at Kazi Nazrul University, Chandradipa Ghosh at Sadhu Ramchand Murmu University in Jhargram, and Abu Taleb Khan at Biswa Bangla Biswavidyalaya.
  • Appointment letters state each tenure begins on joining and runs for four years or until the appointee turns seventy, whichever comes first.
  • The approvals followed an October 6 Supreme Court finding of no impediment to proceeding, after which the state government and Raj Bhavan agreed on the six names and met the candidates at Raj Bhavan on October 27.
  • The Higher Education Department issued formal orders to the universities, Education Minister Bratya Basu said the selections matched the Chief Minister’s first choices, and JU’s new VC cited priorities such as the December 24 convocation and filling vacant posts.
