Welsh Government Declines Call-In, Merthyr Council to Rule on £300m Rhydycar West Snow Resort

The case now returns to Merthyr Tydfil Council for a final planning decision early in the new year.

Overview

  • The Welsh Government confirmed on 21 November that it would not call in the application, saying any policy conflicts should be weighed by the local authority.
  • Merthyr Tydfil’s Planning, Regulatory and Licensing Committee is scheduled to determine the bid in the new year after previously voting unanimously against refusal in March.
  • The proposed resort features a roughly 400-metre indoor slope billed as the UK’s largest, along with a tropical water park, hotels, woodland lodges and a conference and events centre.
  • Project leaders and Snowsport Cymru Wales welcomed the step, highlighting potential economic gains and positioning the site as a future headquarters and training base for GB and Welsh snow-sport teams.
  • The Rhydycar West scheme is promoted as a £300 million investment offering year-round skiing at a location just south-west of the A470 roundabout in Merthyr Tydfil.
