• Police say an intruder defeated a front-door lock between 10 p.m. Aug. 30 and 8:59 a.m. Aug. 31, leaving a child under five with serious injuries.
• Paramedics transported the child to an out-of-region specialist hospital, where the child remains in stable condition.
• Neighbour-provided surveillance video led investigators to identify and arrest 25-year-old Daniel Senecal of Welland.
• Senecal is charged with aggravated sexual assault on a person under 16, assault, assault by choking, break and enter, and sexual interference.
• Detectives from the Child Abuse, Sexual Assault and Forensic Services units are leading the investigation, and police say Senecal was remanded into custody after a Monday hearing as some locals dispute the 'stranger attack' label.
