Well-Marked Bay of Bengal System Prompts Alerts as Heavy Rains Batter Tamil Nadu

IMD alerts flag a high-impact rain window through Oct. 24 with the Bay of Bengal system expected to deepen.

Overview

  • Tamil Nadu’s weather office issued orange and yellow alerts for multiple districts, including Chennai, from Oct. 21–24 as a well-marked low-pressure area formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal.
  • RMC Chennai says the system is likely to consolidate into a depression near the north Tamil Nadu–south Andhra coast by midweek, bringing widespread heavy to very heavy rain.
  • Chennai saw extensive waterlogging, with flooded roads and visuals of an inundated airport runway after Diwali downpours; more spells are forecast for the city and nearby districts.
  • A flood alert was raised in Madurai after the Vaigai River swelled, and landslides in the Nilgiris led Southern Railway to suspend Nilgiri Mountain Railway services between Kallar and Coonoor.
  • Authorities expanded relief readiness, including additional shelters in Chennai, advised fishermen to stay ashore due to rough seas and strong winds, and managed reservoir releases to reduce downstream risk.
