Welfare Groups Seek to Halt Nuremberg Zoo’s Plan to Cull Guinea Baboons

Six animal welfare organizations are appealing to Nuremberg’s environmental committee to block the zoo’s planned cull of up to 20 healthy baboons.

Overview

  • The zoo’s Guinea baboon enclosure was designed for about 25 animals but now holds over 40 individuals, causing frequent fights and injuries.
  • Tiergarten Nürnberg says all transfer efforts have failed to meet European breeding requirements, including a contested offer from the Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary backed by influencer Robert Marc Lehmann.
  • Six organizations—including Pro Wildlife, Deutscher Tierschutzbund, PETA Deutschland, Bund gegen Missbrauch der Tiere, Vier Pfoten and the Deutsche Juristische Gesellschaft für Tierschutzrecht—have lodged an appeal to the city’s environmental committee.
  • The groups contend that killing healthy baboons breaches Germany’s animal welfare law and are preparing criminal complaints should the zoo proceed.
  • Critics warn that resorting to euthanasia exposes decades of inadequate breeding planning and could set a precedent for culling surplus zoo animals.
