Weekend Shootings in East Chicago and Lawndale Kill Two, No Arrests

Overview

  • On July 18 at around 12:45 a.m., Shotspotter sensors detected ten rounds in East Chicago’s Sunnyside area and a 27-year-old victim was later brought to St. Catherine Hospital before dying at University of Chicago Hospital.
  • At about 10:04 p.m. on July 19, a 22-year-old man was approached on foot and fatally shot on the 2800 block of W. Arthington Avenue in Chicago’s Lawndale neighborhood.
  • No suspects are in custody in either shooting as police collect shell casings, examine damaged vehicles and interview potential witnesses.
  • East Chicago and Chicago police departments are pooling Shotspotter data, conducting door-to-door canvassing and analyzing hospital drop-off information to identify leads.
  • Officials are urging anyone with information about either incident to contact tip lines as both investigations remain active and unresolved.
