Weapons Ban at Major Berlin Stations Yields 561 Seizures After Six-Week Operation

Federal police say the time-limited station weapons ban delivered a security gain for Berlin rail passengers.

  • From October 1 to November 17, officers checked 10,723 people during daily inspections between 2 p.m. and 4 a.m.
  • Police secured 561 items from 509 individuals, including 255 knives, 159 irritants, 39 blunt weapons, 15 firearms, 86 potential striking or stabbing objects, and 7 pyrotechnic items.
  • There were 200 violations of the federal general order and 289 violations of weapons law or Berlin’s public transport knife and weapons bans.
  • The checks uncovered 774 criminal offenses, including 194 violent crimes, along with 137 residency-law violations, 128 drug offenses, 836 wanted-person hits, and 62 arrests on open warrants.
  • The ban covered 15 Berlin hubs and Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, including Hauptbahnhof, Alexanderplatz, Zoologischer Garten, Ostbahnhof, Ostkreuz, Gesundbrunnen, Spandau, Südkreuz, and other major stations.
