Weak Wind Knocks Germany’s Renewable Share Lower in H1 2025 as Fossil Output Rises

Official figures attribute the decline to unusually weak winds, shifting more generation to coal and gas.

Overview

  • Renewables supplied 57.8% of Germany’s electricity in the first half, down from 61.6% a year earlier as output fell 5.9%.
  • Wind generation dropped 18.1% to about 60 TWh, yet remained the single largest source with a 27.2% share of domestic production.
  • Solar output jumped 27.9% to 39.3 TWh, reaching a 17.8% share and overtaking gas to become the third‑largest source.
  • Coal generation rose 9.3% to 50.3 TWh (22.7% share) and gas climbed 11.6% to 35.8 TWh, lifting conventional fuels to 42.2% of the mix.
  • Germany was a net power importer, bringing in 37.8 TWh and exporting 29.5 TWh, while total grid feed‑in edged up 0.3% to 221 TWh.
