His career spanned an All-Star season in 1976, decades of mentoring elite goaltenders, front-office leadership for the Sharks, devotion to family during a lengthy cancer fight.

Overview

  • The San Jose Sharks announced on July 16 that Thomas had died at 77 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
  • He recorded a 103-93-34 mark in 243 NHL games from 1972 to 1981 with Montreal, Toronto and New York and earned All-Star honors in 1976.
  • After retiring as a player, he led the IHL’s Salt Lake City Eagles to a Turner Cup championship in 1986 and served as goaltending coach for the Rangers, Blackhawks and Blues.
  • Thomas joined the Sharks in 1993 as an assistant coach and assistant to the general manager, ultimately retiring in 2015 as assistant general manager and vice-president.
  • He is survived by his wife, three daughters, a brother and grandchildren and remained deeply involved in their lives following his retirement.
