Waymo's Autonomous Vehicles Show 88% Fewer Property Damage Claims Than Human Drivers

A Swiss Re study analyzing 25.3 million autonomous miles reveals significant safety advantages of Waymo's self-driving technology over human-driven vehicles, including those with advanced safety features.

Waymo partnered with Swiss Re to analyze liability claims from 25.3 million autonomous miles across Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin.
The study found an 88% reduction in property damage claims and a 92% reduction in bodily injury claims compared to average human drivers.
Waymo's vehicles also outperformed newer human-driven cars with advanced safety technologies, showing an 86% reduction in property damage claims and 90% fewer injury claims.
Across the analyzed miles, Waymo vehicles were involved in nine property damage claims and two bodily injury claims, compared to an expected 78 and 26 respectively for human drivers over the same distance.
The findings underscore the potential of autonomous vehicles to improve road safety and provide a scalable framework for evaluating their impact using insurance data.
