Waymo Withdraws Robotaxis From Uber in Phoenix

Waymo has folded the Phoenix vehicles into its app-based fleet for passenger trips, deliveries, and transit integrations, signaling a strategic split while Uber lines up a different autonomous partner.

Overview

  • Waymo and Uber confirmed late June that the nearly three-year Phoenix robotaxi pilot has ended and Waymo’s vehicles are no longer bookable on Uber’s ride-hail app.
  • Waymo said the wind-down occurred in May and that the cars have been integrated into its Phoenix fleet to carry riders through the Waymo app, support DoorDash deliveries, and link with local transit partners.
  • Uber described the Phoenix deployment as an intentionally limited pilot of just over a dozen vehicles and said it is preparing to launch a separate autonomous-vehicle partnership in the city but did not name the partner.
  • The move highlights a growing strategic divergence: Waymo is pushing direct-to-consumer services, new vehicle models and a subscription product, while Uber is building a platform-agnostic network by signing many AV developers.
  • Industry observers say the Phoenix exit could foreshadow more direct competition between AV developers and ride-hail platforms and may reshape how robotaxi supply, distribution and revenue models evolve.
