Waymo Pulls Robotaxis From Uber in Phoenix

The shift hands the small Phoenix fleet back to Waymo, signaling a split in how the two companies will roll out autonomous taxi services.

Overview

  • Waymo’s robotaxis are no longer offered through Uber in Phoenix after the companies ended their limited partnership, and the vehicles now appear only in Waymo’s own app.
  • Waymo says the cars used in the pilot have been reintegrated into its Phoenix fleet and will continue serving riders through Waymo’s services and its transit and delivery integrations.
  • Uber described the Phoenix run as an intentionally limited pilot of just over a dozen vehicles and said it is preparing a separate autonomous-vehicle partnership for the city but did not name the partner.
  • Both companies called the pilot productive and said they learned from the work together, even as they continue to partner in other cities such as Austin and Atlanta and potentially compete directly in new markets.
  • The change reflects a wider shift in the robotaxi market as Waymo scales to thousands of vehicles and hundreds of thousands of weekly trips while Uber pursues an aggregator model that plugs multiple AV providers into its network.
