Waymo Extends Robotaxi Routes in California and Seeks New York Testing Permit

A permit under review by New York’s Department of Transportation would allow Waymo to conduct supervised trials in Manhattan as it presses for full autonomy in state law.

In an aerial view, Waymo cars are seen parked on June 10, 2025, in San Francisco. The robotaxi company limited its service in the city amid anti-ICE protests, after several Waymo cars were set on fire and destroyed in Los Angeles.

Overview

  • Waymo has added around 80 square miles of coverage across Los Angeles County and the San Francisco Peninsula, boosting its California footprint to roughly 250 square miles.
  • The company applied for a New York City Department of Transportation permit to test autonomous vehicles in Manhattan with trained safety drivers behind the wheel.
  • Under current New York state law, all autonomous tests must include a human operator, leading Waymo to lobby for legal changes that would permit fully driverless service.
  • Waymo’s fleet of more than 1,500 Jaguar I-Pace SUVs runs over 250,000 paid trips per week in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Austin.
  • The firm plans commercial launches in Atlanta, Miami and Washington, D.C. by 2026 with growing competition from rivals such as Tesla.
