In an aerial view, Waymo cars are seen parked on June 10, 2025, in San Francisco. The robotaxi company limited its service in the city amid anti-ICE protests, after several Waymo cars were set on fire and destroyed in Los Angeles.

Overview

  • The company has added 80 square miles to its California coverage, extending its robotaxis into Bay Area suburbs like Brisbane, South San Francisco and Burlingame as well as Los Angeles neighborhoods including Echo Park and Sunset Boulevard.
  • Waymo now serves more than 250,000 paid trips per week across its four markets and has reached 10 million total paid rides to date.
  • Driverless vehicles in Waymo’s fleet record 81 percent fewer airbag-deployment crashes and 78 percent fewer injury-causing collisions than traditional cars, though several robotaxis were vandalized and burned during recent Los Angeles protests.
  • Waymo has applied for a New York City Department of Transportation permit to run Jaguar I-Pace robotaxis with trained safety operators in Manhattan and is lobbying state lawmakers to allow fully autonomous operations.
  • The Alphabet unit plans to expand its fleet from about 1,500 to 3,500 vehicles by 2026 and to launch services in Atlanta, Miami and Washington, D.C. next year.
