Waymo's self-driving taxi service area in Austin is once again bigger than Tesla's.

Overview

  • Waymo’s coverage area jumped from 37 to 90 square miles, adding neighborhoods such as Crestview, Windsor Park, Sunset Valley and Franklin Park.
  • The company deploys over 1,500 vehicles across Austin, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Atlanta with no waitlists or onboard safety drivers.
  • Earlier this week, Waymo surpassed 100 million miles driven with its fully autonomous, lidar- and radar-equipped vehicles.
  • Tesla’s Model Y trial remains invite-only and supervised, limited to about a dozen cars operating from 6 a.m. to midnight in a smaller geofenced zone.
  • Regulators still require human monitors for Tesla’s camera-only system, creating scaling hurdles that Waymo’s unsupervised model avoids.
