Waymo, DoorDash Launch Phoenix Pilot for Driverless Deliveries

DashMart orders will be eligible for app-unlocked trunk pickup from Waymo vehicles.

Overview

  • The companies announced a pilot in the greater Phoenix service area, which spans about 315 square miles, with availability rolling out in the coming months.
  • The program will begin with orders from DoorDash’s DashMart convenience, grocery, and retail stores before expanding to additional merchants.
  • Customers can opt in at checkout for autonomous delivery and use the DoorDash app to unlock the vehicle’s trunk to collect their items.
  • There will be no driver tips and the same cars will handle both passenger rides and deliveries to improve fleet utilization, according to a person familiar with Waymo.
  • The initiative advances DoorDash’s broader autonomy strategy that includes its Dot sidewalk robot and a Serve Robotics partnership in Los Angeles.
