• Waymo has deployed a limited fleet of vehicles with human safety drivers in Philadelphia to map downtown, freeway corridors and neighborhood streets through fall.
• The company’s cars will operate at all hours across zones from North Central to Eastwick, University City and along the Delaware River to capture local traffic patterns.
• Waymo applied last month for a permit from the New York City Department of Transportation to conduct similar human-supervised tests in Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, Jersey City and Hoboken.
• These road trips feed into a phased expansion model that uses human-driven mapping tours and supervised autonomous trials to refine its AI driving system in new urban environments.
• Data collected during testing will support planned commercial robotaxi launches in Miami later this year and in Washington, D.C., in 2026.
