Watzke Steps Down as BVB CEO, Faces Presidency Vote at Delayed Hybrid Members’ Meeting

He paired his exit with a pledge for an independent review of newly public abuse claims.

Overview

  • Borussia Dortmund convened its first hybrid members’ meeting in the Westfalenhalle, but proceedings began roughly an hour late due to registration and technical problems.
  • Hans-Joachim Watzke left his role as chief executive of the BVB KGaA and stood as the sole candidate to lead the registered club, with the presidential vote still pending.
  • Addressing historical abuse allegations against a former long-term employee from the 1990s, Watzke said two external law firms have been commissioned and promised to remedy any apparent institutional failings.
  • Watzke noted the accused no longer works for BVB and recalled that, after he referred the matter to then-president Reinhard Rauball, the individual was later re-elected to the Ältestenrat and hired by the e.V. in 2012.
  • Watzke and outgoing president Reinhold Lunow publicly reconciled after months of internal dispute, as members also weighed elections for vice president and treasurer and proposed statute changes, with fan criticism including the Rheinmetall advertising deal in the background.
