Waterbury Man Charged in Basilica Statue Damage as Priest Offers Forgiveness

Police reported no indication of a weapon despite the initial disturbance call.

Overview

  • Officers responded around 8:11 a.m. to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury and allegedly found a man striking a statue.
  • Police said the bottom of the statue was broken and they later reported no sign the suspect possessed a weapon.
  • The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Kyran Atkinson of Wolcott, did not comply with commands and was incapacitated with a Taser before being taken into custody.
  • Atkinson was charged with first- and third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree breach of peace, interfering with an officer, and deprivation of rights.
  • He is being held on a $100,000 bond pending arraignment Thursday, as the church’s priest expressed forgiveness and said the statue was hit with a hammer while arranging repairs.
